Your first pilates class: what to bring and what to expect

·3 min read

Nobody's first class is graceful, and everyone in the room already knows it. Here's the practical version, so the only thing you have to think about is showing up.

What to wear

Something fitted enough that an instructor can actually see your alignment — leggings or shorts, and a top that stays put when you tip upside down. Avoid zips and buckles; they scratch the equipment. Grip socks are required.

What to bring

Water, and a towel if you're heading into the hot room. That is genuinely it — mats, reformers and props are all here waiting for you.

When to arrive

Ten minutes early for your first class. That isn't for paperwork: it's so your instructor can set your springs, ask about old injuries, and show you how the equipment moves before anything starts.

What actually happens

You'll be guided through every transition out loud. You'll be corrected — by name, and quietly. You'll probably shake. That's the muscle doing precisely what it's meant to, not a sign that you're failing.

The short version

You will not be the worst person in the room. That isn't how this works.
